Depression in Women: Could It Be Your Hormone Levels?

You may have heard somewhere that women tend to be more susceptible to depression than men are, and it’s true. In fact, women are twice as likely to experience its effects. This isn’t because men are somehow immune to depression, it’s more that women may be taking on too much—spreading themselves too thin. Modern women often face the stress of holding down a job while also doing the bulk of household chores and childcare, leaving them little to no time to practice self care. Combine that with already fluctuating hormones from the monthly menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, and it can be a recipe for depression. Hormonal disruptions can be brought on by poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, environmental factors, and more, and these types of lifestyle factors can exacerbate the symptoms women already experience when their hormones are in flux. Read more…
